Deuteronomy 6

Moses exhorts the Israelites not to forget the God who freed them from bondage in Egypt, to revere and worship only God, and to swear only by God’s name, lest the anger of God blaze forth against them and wipe them off the face of the earth.

Deuteronomy 7

Moses tells the Israelites that when God brings them to the land and dislodges seven nations before them the Israelites are to doom them to destruction, grant them no terms, and give them no quarter. The Israelites are not to intermarry with them, for they will turn the Israelites’ children away from God, and God’s anger will blaze forth against the Israelites and wipe them out.

Deuteronomy 8

Moses tells the Israelites that when they enter the Promised Land and have eaten their fill, if they forget God and follow other gods, they will certainly perish like the nations that God displaces from the land.

Deuteronomy 9

Moses exhorts the Israelites to remember how they have provoked God to anger in the wilderness from the day that they left Egypt. Moses had prayed to God not to annihilate God’s own people, and God had agreed not to destroy them.

Deuteronomy 14

Moses prohibits the Israelites from eating any unclean animals. They are to set aside every year a tenth part of all the yield of their harvest. Every third year, they are to bring out the full tithe, to be eaten by the Levites and the needy.

Deuteronomy 18

Moses puts forth rules for the office of priest. He warns the Israelites not to follow the practices of the inhabitants of Canaan. He tells them God will raise a prophet from among them like Moses, and the Israelites are to heed him.

Deuteronomy 19

Moses tells the Israelites they are to set aside three cities of refuge, so that any manslayer could have a place to which to flee. An Israelite can be found guilty of an offense only on the testimony of two or more witnesses. If one person gives false testimony, then they are to do to the witness as the witness schemed to do to the other.

Deuteronomy 20

Moses tells the Israelites that before a battle, the priest is to tell the troops not to fear, that God will accompany them. He sets forth rules for war including exemptions from military service, and peace terms before battle. In cities outside Canaan they are to save the women, children and cattle, but the inhabitants of Canaan are to be utterly destroyed.

Deuteronomy 27

Moses and the elders charge the people to build an altar to God, and to offer on it burnt offerings. Moses charges the people that half of the tribes are to stand on Mount Gerizim (pictured, left) when the blessings are spoken, and half the tribes stand on Mount Ebal (pictured, right) when the curses are spoken.

Moses pronounces great blessings of prosperity over Israel if they obey God, and horrible curses of violent suffering and destruction if they do not.

Deuteronomy 29

Moses urges the Israelites to observe faithfully all the commandments, that they might prosper in the land. He warns them that God's anger would rage against them if they forsake the covenant that God makes with them and turn to the service of other gods.

Deuteronomy 30

After all these curses befall the Israelites, God will restore them to the land. Moses says that he sets before them the choice between life with prosperity and death with adversity. He exhorts them to choose life by loving God.

Deuteronomy 31

God has told Moses, age 120, that he will not be going over the Jordan River, that Joshua will lead the Israelites, and that God will go with them. Moses and Joshua present themselves in the tabernacle. God appears in a pillar of cloud and prophesies the fate of Israel.

Moses recites the song that God had told him to write and teach to the people. That day God tells Moses to ascend Mount Nebo and view the land of Canaan, for he was to die on the mountain, as his brother Aaron had died on Mount Hor.
